What changed
Google started testing a Buy button inside Gemini and AI Mode in India on September 26. Shoppers searching for phones or electronics see select Flipkart listings with the button. One tap opens Flipkart's checkout without leaving Google's interface. The test covers a small group of users and a narrow list of products. Google plans wider access in October, before India's big holiday shopping season. Google invested $350 million in Flipkart in 2024.
What you can do with it now
If you sell online and your customers are in a market where Google rolls this out, your products can appear where people already search. You don't need to build a new storefront. You connect your inventory to Google's shopping tools the same way you would for regular search results. The AI shows your listing. The shopper taps Buy. Your existing checkout handles the rest. If you sell through a platform like Shopify or WooCommerce, check whether your provider is joining Google's commerce program. If you're on Flipkart or a partner marketplace, the door is already open.
What to keep in your own hands
Pick which checkout page the sale goes through. In this test, Flipkart's branding appears, not Google's. That means Flipkart holds the transaction and the customer relationship. Make sure you know who owns the customer data, who sets the return policy, and what fees apply to each sale. If Google or the marketplace changes terms, confirm you can still export your customer list and move to a different platform. Don't let one sales channel become the only way buyers can reach you.
