What changed
On October 5, a16z released its seventh Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps report, this time adding real consumer spending data from YipitData. The top 1% of AI payers spend an average of $903 per month on consumer credit cards, accounting for 19.5% of all observed AI spending, more than the bottom 50% combined. The median payer spends $25. Only 4.5% of eligible US consumers pay for AI tools at all. The heavy spenders are not buying premium ChatGPT plans. They are 23 times more likely to pay for n8n, 18 times for fal and Manus, and 15 times for Higgsfield, tools for automation, code generation, and video creation.
What you can do with it this week
Look at the tools the top spenders use, not the ones with the most users. If you run a marketing agency, test Higgsfield for video ads instead of outsourcing edits. If you manage operations, try n8n to automate invoice processing or client onboarding. If you write proposals or contracts, check whether Manus or a similar builder tool can template your drafts. These are not household names, but they are what people who spend serious money on AI actually use. Start with one task you repeat every week and see if a builder tool can handle it. If it saves two hours, that is $100 to $200 in labor, which pays for a $25 to $50 monthly subscription in the first week.
What to keep in your own hands
Do not chase a $903 monthly bill just because the top spenders do. That group likely has overlapping subscriptions and experimental tools they barely use. Pick one or two tools that solve a specific bottleneck, measure the time saved, and stop there. Never paste sensitive client data, financial records, or employee information into a new tool without checking its terms of service and data retention policy. Many of these builder tools are young companies with unclear data practices. If the tool disappears or changes its pricing, make sure you can export your work and move it elsewhere. Keep your customer list, your pricing, and your final output in formats you control, not locked inside a single platform.
